What are Dermal Fillers?

“Dermal filler” is a general term used to describe various types of cosmetic filler materials. Historically, dermal filler was derived from bovine, or cow, collagen. There are also other forms that are derived from human collagen. These types of dermal fillers are rarely used today as they offer short durations and increase the risk of skin reactions.

Today, most dermal fillers are made from a natural substance found in the body, primarily in the skin, called hyaluronic acid. This is what keeps our skin looking young, tight, and plump.

While there are different brands of dermal fillers available, at Jupiter Medical, we use mainly Juvederm and Belotero fillers. They are non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) that lasts more than twice as long as the previously used bovine collagen fillers.

What Are Dermal Fillers Used For?

There are several uses for dermal fillers, including the treatment and removal of wrinkles and folds, the augmentation of lips or to shape facial contours. They can even improve the appearance of scars, and it’s all done safely without the need for lengthy and uncomfortable surgical procedures.

How Do Dermal Filler Treatments Work?

The filler is injected into the target area where it helps to restore volume and firmness in the skin. This reduces the appearance of wrinkles and scars.

The filler acts as a binder since hyaluronic acid can attract 1000 time its weight in water to help plump up the skin. This helps the body to generate more collagen production over a prolonged period of time with effects that can last for 6 to 12 months.

Why Do I Need Dermal Fillers?

The aging process limits the body’s ability to produce hyaluronic acid, which helps to bind water. With less water in the skin, it becomes thinner and looser, forming wrinkles.

Dermal fillers offer a great way to maintain the body’s own natural ability to hold water in the skin. They provide for instant wrinkle and scar softening results that are safe and effective for up to a year.

The Risks of Dermal Filler Injectables Treatments

When administered correctly by a Aesthetics physician, there is very little risk of reaction. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound found in the skin, so it already exists in the body.

There is no recovery time needed after treatment and side effects are relatively rare, although there may be some redness or swelling at the injection points. This tends to last only a couple of days. Bruising is also possible.

In a small percentage of cases, some patients may develop prolonged red, sore, or swollen areas, while others may infrequently experience mild irritation or infection.
